Georgia is often referred to as the “motherland of winemaking” or “cradle of wine” due to its ancient and rich wine culture. Archaeological evidence suggests that winemaking in Georgia dates back over 8,000 years, making it one of the oldest wine-producing regions in the world.
The country has a unique tradition of fermenting wine in large clay vessels called qvevri, which are buried underground. This method is recognized for producing distinct flavors and is part of UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage. Georgian wines are often made from indigenous grape varieties, such as Saperavi and Rkatsiteli, which contribute to the country’s unique wine profile.
Georgia’s historical significance in the wine industry is also tied to its geographical location along the Silk Road, facilitating trade and cultural exchange. Today, the country is experiencing a renaissance in its wine production, attracting attention from international wine enthusiasts and contributing to the revival of ancient winemaking techniques.
Among the numerous Georgian wine varieties, Saperavi and Rkatsiteli stand out as the most renowned. Saperavi is a red grape known for its deep color and rich flavor, while Rkatsiteli is a white grape celebrated for its acidity and aromatic profile. The traditional winemaking technique in Georgia involves fermenting grapes in qvevri, which are buried underground. This method not only preserves the wine’s natural flavors but also allows for a unique fermentation process that enhances its character. The use of native yeast and minimal intervention further contributes to the production of high-quality wines that reflect the terroir
Moving on to our wine company. it is called the Estate Ozhio. The name takes after the place where the wine fields are laid out. Ozhio owns a vineyard as well as a wine cellar in Akhmeta, Kakheti. This place is well known for its Microzone. Vineyard soil type is semi-damp, which allows the grapes to grow extremely pure, sustainable, and eco-friendly and they are not artificially preserved.
Ozhio also has its very own Qvevri, which is a large earthenware vessel used for the fermentation, storage, and aging of traditional Georgian wine
