Mushvig Mammadli is a Member of the Milli Majlis (National Assembly) and a member of the Committee on Healthcare. With a medical education and extensive experience in the field of public health, he actively participates in the development and support of initiatives aimed at improving the quality of life of citizens and modernizing the country’s healthcare system. Azerbaijan Today Magazine spoke with Mr. Mammadli about the key aspects of healthcare development and the future of Azerbaijan.
A.T: Mr. Mammadli, according to WHO data and other international indices, Azerbaijan is currently undergoing active development of its healthcare system. In your opinion, what steps should be taken to improve the quality of medical services and enhance the country’s international standing in this field?
M.M: As in all areas, cooperation in the field of healthcare is crucial for monitoring global development processes and ensuring the progress of Azerbaijan. Collaboration within the framework of the Organization of Turkic States (OTS) and the World Health Organization (WHO) is of particular importance. In addition, connections between professional medical communities play a key role in the development of medical personnel. The healthcare reforms implemented in Azerbaijan have elevated the system to a new level. I believe that important elements in this process will be the accreditation of healthcare institutions, certification of medical professionals, effective use of resources from the Mandatory Health Insurance Fund, and healthy competition between the private and public sectors.
A.T: Mr. Mammadli, you are a doctor by profession, but for many years you have worked successfully in parliament. What qualities of the medical profession help you in your legislative work, and to which of these roles do you feel more personally connected?
M.M: I believe that my medical background has been a great help, especially as a member of parliament, in understanding the psychological aspects of people’s expectations from their government and legislative bodies. Furthermore, my practical experience as a physician has played a significant role in understanding how to prevent difficulties that may arise during the implementation of laws adopted in the field of healthcare legislation and healthcare reform.
