President Ilham Aliyev Opens a New Page for the South Caucasus

An interview with Mr. Mushvig Mammadli is a Member of the Milli Majlis (National Assembly).

AT: In your opinion, what significance does the recent agreement between Armenia and Azerbaijan hold for regional policy?

M.M: The recent agreement is an important step toward easing tensions that have persisted in the region for many years and establishing lasting peace. This document not only contributes to the normalization of relations between Armenia and Azerbaijan, but also expands opportunities for regional cooperation and creates conditions for implementing economic projects.

AT: What circumstances and events led to the fact that the agreements were reached at this particular moment?

M.M: First and foremost — the farsighted policy and correct strategic course pursued by Mr. President Ilham Aliyev, as well as the unity of the people around their leader, which made it possible to put an end to 30 years of injustice and create a new political reality in the region. At the current stage, both international and regional geopolitical realities, the mutual political will of the parties, and the new security environment that emerged after the conflict created the conditions for signing this agreement right now. An important role was also played by President Trump’s decisive stance in establishing lasting peace. It was also significant that the Armenian authorities drew the right conclusions from the growing pressure related to economic necessity and the resolution of humanitarian issues.

AT: How might the concluded agreement change the balance of power in the South Caucasus and Central Asia?

M.M: By reducing tensions in the region, this agreement could contribute to the opening of new economic corridors and deepening cooperation in the field of security. As a result, the process of integration between the countries of the South Caucasus and Central Asia will accelerate, and the importance of the region on the global energy and transportation map will increase even further.

AT: What practical measures are needed to ensure that the agreements reached are implemented and do not remain merely formal?

M.M: The most complete answer to this question is contained in the words of the President of Azerbaijan, spoken in Washington: “In the number one capital of the world, in the number one office of the world, in the presence of the most powerful president in the world, we signed this agreement. Therefore, everyone understands the importance of its implementation.”
