The Azerbaijan Society of America (ASA), is the oldest organization in the USA to represent the interests of the Azerbaijani diaspora community here in the U.S. ASA has played a significant role in US, both federal and state elections. Diaspora organizations often use their position to influence local and federal politics in a way that reflects their values, interests, and the interests of their home country. As an organization established in the U.S. in 1957, we realize participating in the electoral process helps ensure that our voices are heard. Our involvement not only strengthens the community’s ties to the host country but also amplifies our influence in shaping policy decision that impact us and future generations. This is true with both local and federal level. For us it is also important to stay connected to both our Azerbaijani roots and to our American identity.
In the US elections last November, ASA worked with the community promoting voter registration, advocacy and issues of awareness, volunteering their assistance in the candidates’ local offices. As a result, many Azerbaijani Americans were active in the election process and exercised their right to vote. Our members were also encouraged to accept election outcomes and respect the democratic process. Elections are the cornerstone of democracy, and accepting the results, even when one disagrees, is important for maintaining political stability and upholding the rule of law.
Many people voted, including Azerbaijani Americans, for President Trump in 2024 because they were frustrated with the political establishment and wanted change. His campaign resonated with voters who felt that government spending was excessive, and that taxpayer money was not being used efficiently. Trump positioned himself as a candidate who would challenge the status quo and cut wasteful spending.
During his presidential campaigns, President Trump often made statements about reducing U.S. involvement in foreign conflicts, including those in Ukraine and the Middle East. He emphasized an “America First” approach, which included bringing troops home and avoiding prolonged military engagements. In the case of Ukraine, he was critical of U.S. involvement in conflicts abroad, and this resonated with many voters. Trump’s foreign policy appears to be more focused on America’s direct interests. This was appealing to a large part of the American electorate, including our community.
It’s a long-established tradition for the newly elected US president to report on the first 100 days of their term. They list key actions, decisions, and changes they’ve implemented during those first 100 days, including actions addressing their campaign promises. This speech / report serves as a summary of their administration’s immediate priorities, challenges, and achievements. We expect President Trump will also update the American public emphasizing both the successes and the hurdles, showing leadership.
We all hope for a better future after an election, regardless of the outcome. Elections often bring a mix of emotions, but the desire for positive change and progress remains a shared hope for many.
