Azerbaijan’s Azerenerji Launches Largest Thermal Power Plant in AZERBAIJAN at 1880 MW
OJSC Azerenerji has commissioned a new thermal power plant “November 8” with a capacity of 1,880 MW in Mingachevir in the central part of the country on Tuesday, the press service of Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, who took part in the launch of the facility, reported.
“Today, the November 8 power plant is the largest power plant in our country,” the head of state noted at the opening ceremony.
According to him, the launch of the TPP will significantly strengthen Azerbaijan’s energy potential.
“Over the past 20 years, we have built the country’s energy system practically from scratch. New power plants have been built in different regions of Azerbaijan, including restoration work in Mingachevir. In 2018, the reconstruction of the Azerbaijan TPP began, and on June 25, 2020 – exactly five years ago – a new station was launched here. Currently, the generation capacity of the Azerbaijan TPP is 1800 MW, the capacity of the November 8 station is 1880 MW, and the capacity of the hydroelectric power station is more than 400 MW,” Aliyev said.
He emphasized that more than 40% of all electricity in the republic is generated in Mingachevir, which has become “the main energy center not only of Azerbaijan, but also of the entire South Caucasus.
“The project was implemented by Azerenergy OJSC. The construction of the November 8 TPP has been underway since 2023. The construction work was carried out by the Italian Ansaldo Energia and the Chinese Dongfang with the involvement of the local BCC Group.
By commissioning this station and reducing the conventional fuel consumption, it will save 1 billion cubic meters of natural gas per year and prevent the emission of 2 million tons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.
