Azerbaijan is preparing to host a historic event—the upcoming summit of the Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO) in the city of Khankendi. This summit carries not only symbolic weight but also strategic value, both politically and economically, for Azerbaijan and the wider region.
The Economic Cooperation Organization today represents a significant force on the global stage. With a combined population of 570 million, a nominal GDP of $2.61 trillion, and a real GDP of $8.83 trillion, the ECO has evolved beyond a regional alliance into a global economic and political power center. The steady economic growth of its member states—averaging around 4% over the past decade and 3.7% in 2023—outpaces the global average of 2.8%, reflecting the dynamism and potential of this alliance.
The decision to host the summit in Khankendi is deeply symbolic. It reflects the return of peace and order to a previously conflict-affected region and reinforces Azerbaijan’s rising geopolitical profile. Holding such a significant international event in Khankendi underscores Azerbaijan’s ability to restore stability, invest in development, and assert itself as a capable and confident regional leader.
From a political standpoint, this summit is an opportunity for Azerbaijan to deepen diplomatic ties with fellow ECO members. Many of these countries are already strategic partners, and the summit offers a platform to further align on key regional and global issues. It allows Azerbaijan to position itself as a central actor in shaping the regional agenda—strengthening unity, promoting dialogue, and enhancing multilateral cooperation.
Economically, the summit is expected to catalyze closer collaboration in various sectors, including trade, transport, energy, agriculture, and digital infrastructure. Azerbaijan has already taken significant steps to improve connectivity and economic integration in the region through initiatives like the Zangezur Corridor and the Middle Corridor. The ECO Summit presents an opportunity to showcase these initiatives and attract new investments from member states and beyond.
Moreover, hosting this summit reinforces Azerbaijan’s role as a reliable partner in international diplomacy. The country’s consistent hosting of high-level international events demonstrates its commitment to active engagement in global processes. It enhances Azerbaijan’s visibility, strengthens its international reputation, and supports its long-term foreign policy objectives.
In conclusion, the ECO Summit in Khankendi is more than just a gathering of leaders—it is a turning point. It reflects Azerbaijan’s growing influence, celebrates its territorial integrity, and unlocks new pathways for economic and political cooperation. As the region transitions into a new era of peace and development, this summit will stand as a testament to Azerbaijan’s role as a builder of bridges—both literal and diplomatic—between nations.
